Croatia revisited

May 7-15, 2023
Exploring the Dalmatian Coast on foot and bike

EACL offers another opportunity to visit Croatia, but Anaā€™s request for a bike tour around the islands seals the dealā€¦ The funny thing is, we donā€™t even do a whole lot of biking on this trip :ā€™)

Gear: Rodriguez Rainier, a single rear Ortlieb pannier (credit carding all the way).

Dubrovnik

The first week of May is EACL, held in Dubrovnik. Iā€™m astounded by the bullet holes that one can still see on all the buildings in old town.

We ferry to Pomena on May 7 to begin our adventure.

Mljet NP

May 8, 2023: 11.1 mi, 810 ft

We rent an electric bike for Kyle and explore the Mljet NP. I am plagued by flats, though an earnest/annoying(?) local man helps provide the tool to save me. That evening, we ferry to Korčula while Kyle departs for Split.

Korčula to Vela Luka

May 9, 2023: 33.3 mi, 2625 ft

The route across Korčula traverses rugged coastline, quaint mountain towns, vineyards and farmland.

Hvar + Stari Grad

May 10, 2023: 24.2 mi, 3002 ft

Due to an impending storm, we alter our plans to skip Brač and head directly back to Split after a visit to Hvar. Our bike touring ends with this short ride: one hill two ways.

SviniŔće

May 12, 2023: 13.5 mi, 1299 ft

Though the biking is over, the exploration is not. Papa M brings us back to OmiÅ” and I enjoy some hilly runs in the rain.

Fortica revisited (OmiÅ”)

May 13, 2023

And every visit to OmiÅ” must be accompanied by a hike up to Fortica, followed by the best homecooked meal.
